![]() Either way, exploring in detail the nameless things would probably have constituted a disservice to the eldritch elements at play. ![]() In these instances, I personally prefer a more Lovecraftian interpretation to one more conventionally in touch with the established setting. Perhaps present before the Ainulindalë, to me they are things which were present at the time before there was time, and perhaps they have always been there, as entities Other than Eru. Or, and this interpretation has less to back it beyond personal preference, the nameless things are of the Void outside of Eä. I believe that the nameless things beneath the earth are either remnants of failed attempts of creation from Melkor and thus terrible to behold to any creature which was made at the behalf the One. Theory time, with literally no textual evidence to back it up. This could allow us to understand Gandalf as having a bit of a high threshold for understanding of things the others present do not. At least, we can heavily deduce them to be frightening to him in the context of this scene. The nameless things are frightening to Gandalf, who as an Istar, is also a maia. I am hesitant also to believe that Ungoliant is the only entity which dates back to unknown origin and time. Of all things whose lineage can be traced back, in some way, to the world's beginning, Ungoliant's cannot. That said, I would speculate on this point. I think it's one of those details whose effectiveness comes from our inability to know or classify exactly what is going on here. Well, I don't believe these things are ever expanded on or even really addressed in any other writing. Many readers have, for instance, rather stuck at the Council of Elrond. And even in a mythical Age there must be some enigmas, as there always are. As a story, I think it is good that there should be a lot of things unexplained (especially if an explanation actually exists) and I have perhaps from this point of view erred in trying to explain too much, and give too much past history. "There is of course a clash between ‘literary’ technique, and the fascination of elaborating in detail an imaginary mythical Age (mythical, not allegorical: my mind does not work allegorically). I dont see why the Nameless Things can't be enigmas too, since there is so very little written about them anyway and they barely play a role in any of the main stories. Tom Bombadil is specifically one of them. Tolkien said in a letter that a realistic world has some things that are left unexplained. ![]() I like to think the nameless things (as hinted by their names) are purposefully implemented by Tolkien as enigmas. So what the hell are these things? Because they sounds like horrific and primordial beings that drive Gandalf to despair, a bit like Ungoliant. The nameless things are really, really bad news ( Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day.).The nameless things are older than even Sauron himself ( They are older than he.).The nameless things are unknown to Sauron ( Even Sauron knows them not.).The nameless things resides deep beneath the earth and gnaw the world ( Far, far below the deepest delving of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things.).Ever up now we went, until we came to the Endless Stair. Thus he brought me back at last to the secret ways of Khazad-dûm: too well he knew them all. In that despair my enemy was my only hope, and I pursued him, clutching at his heel. Now I have walked there, but I will bring no report to darken the light of day. Far, far below the deepest delving of the Dwarves, the world is gnawed by nameless things. They were not made by Durin's folk, Gimli son of Glóin. Ever he clutched me, and ever I hewed him, till at last he fled into dark tunnels. We fought far under the living earth, where time is not counted.
